The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks: Book Review

I want to open a bookstore now after reading The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks! Maggie makes it seem so easy!

Anti-bookworm Maggie Banks comes to Bell River to help out in her best friend’s bookstore. But she struggles to follow the strict rules put in place by the historic society, and eventually decides to play by her own rule book in order to bring new life to the store.

Maggie starts an ”illegal” book club with fun events for readers to enjoy, which you would think would be difficult as she gets closer to one of the historical society’s strictest employees. Her secrets grow when she finds out about some history that has been hidden in the town.

How will Maggie get out of this one?

I really enjoyed this one! I had read Must Love Books by Shauna Robinson before, and this one felt a little lighter than her debut novel. Despite its lightness, it does tackle the issues of young people trying to find their fit in the world (while also making rent) and the dangers of holding too tight onto tradition.

One thing Shauna Robinson will do is feature some amazing books to add to your TBR, contemporary and classics. It is always fun seeing shoutouts to other books inside of a story.

I also enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers in the budding romance between Malcolm and Maggie. I wish Malcolm may have been flushed out a bit more, but their romance was super cute.

Overall, I would recommend this book. It is cute, adequately paced, and lots of fun. Before you know it, you will also be a part of Maggie Army!
